MTV官方宣布了2016年“MTV音乐录影带大奖”所有提名名单，天后碧昂斯此次凭借堪称她文艺事业转折点的专辑《Lemonade》，获得了职业生涯最好成绩，11项录影带提名，阿黛尔也不甘示弱，获奖提名高达8项，她在Youtube上刷新记录的单曲录影带《Hello》就获得7项提名。阿黛尔（Adele）的《Hello》，碧昂斯（Beyoncé）的《Formation》，德雷克（Drake）的《Hotline Bling》，贾斯丁？比伯（Justin Bieber）的《Sorry》，坎耶？维斯特（Kanye West）的《Famous》均获得“年度最佳录影带（Video of the Year）”提名。2016“MTV音乐录影带大奖”将会在8月28日美国东部／西部时间晚上9点在纽约麦迪逊广场花园时时进行直播。

为了呼应与响应这一在艺术领域，世界重量级艺人将音乐录影带推向全新高度的一年，MTV将“MTV音乐录影带大奖”提名名单公布在了纽约东区一面广阔亮丽的全景壁画上。这一壁画由来自纽约东区第一大街绿色艺术公园（Green Art Park）的世界著名视觉艺术家BD White，John Paul Ogrodnick （JPO），Damien Mitchell，Marc Evan，Resa，BKFoxx，Queen Andrea，Hektad，Giz，Such，Poem One共同创作。壁画的创作全程以一个Facebook直播事件形式，由MTV新闻记者Meredith Graves ， Gaby Wilson通过MTV和一个由15个媒体公司和品牌组成的联盟，在Facebook上向世界各地的人们进行直播。
